Ear wax, also known as cerumen, is a natural substance produced by glands in the ear canal.
Its role is to protect and clean the ear, trapping dust, debris and bacteria before they reach deeper into the ear.
A small amount of ear wax is normal and healthy. However, when too much builds up it can cause symptoms such as blocked ears, reduced hearing, discomfort or ringing.
Professional removal may be needed when the wax does not clear naturally.
It's important that the wax is soft to make the procedure as comfortable and effective as possible. We recommend using medicated olive oil drops, once per day in the affected ear and repeat for five days before your appointment. Failure to comply may result in a further appointment.
We offer a free return appointment within 14 days for any post procedure concerns. If two appointments are required to remove the wax the second appointment would be half price.
Prior to appointment we would ask you to complete a questionaire to highlight any conditions which may affect the procedure and outline risks before checking you are happy to proceed. We will then have a look in your ears using an otoscope.
Providing the wax is soft, we would use warm water irrigation and/or microsuction to remove the wax.
If the wax is too hard to remove, we will advise you to use wax softening drops such as olive oil before booking you in for a second appointment to remove the wax.
